Mutant Pop Catalog #38:
"Two of the quality bands of the American buzz-pop underground... The Proteens are a vaguely post-Ramones
three chord outfit, definitely retaining their own sound and adapting only sparingly from those illustrious forefathers. Two songs here, both
non-album. The Grand Prixx are more thrash-pop in orientation: hella catchy but inclined to trade circle-pit tempo and energy for pure melodicism.
I'd put them next to bands like The Lizards, The Drop-Outs, and Boogada-era Screeching Weasel. Good disc!" - Tim Chandler
Now Wave Magazine:
"What is it with Whoa Oh putting together great splits? This totally ruins my rule about one band always
triumphing over another on splits!
I love The Grand Prixx. Which is odd. I usually hate snotty vocals. But for some reason, these guys got it goin' on! I can't help but
make the comparison- To me, take Slapstick (that Chicago punk-ska band), and take out the ska, every last drop, and you've got the Prixx.
I know to many, I'll be far off, but that's the way it sounds to me. They will be huge.
To finish off the split, you've got The Proteens. The Proteens are masters of the Ramones-core craft. But unlike a lot of today's
Ramones-core bands, they are completely in their own. They have a sound that's unmatched. Everything is tight. "Do What You Wanna Do"
is my pick. This seems to be their latest release. It sounds like these guys have fallen off the earth. I wonder what they are up to.
You record collection isn't complete until you've owned this." - Mike Welch
Maximum Rock N Roll:
"The Proteens do sweet guy pop punk about girls. The Grand Prixx do songs about girls and complaining."
- Bobby Manic
Go Metric:
"The Proteens take this pop punk showdown, no contest. Their Ramones-core is poppier and, in keeping with the natural order,
maintains a 1:1 ratio of love songs to monster songs. There's even a touch of Ean Sicko in the vocals." - Mike Faloon
